Shannon Boodram

I am a journalist: I am a writer, a photographer and a television host. I am also a novelist with my first book is in major bookstores across North America TODAY!

Laid is being published through Seal Press in Berkley California, I am a TV personality on RogersTV Toronto and this year I won “Best On-Air Personality 2009” in Canada for Rogers TV. I have published articles with CBC.ca, Metro News Toronto, Desi News, Peace Magazine, Cream World Magazine, Urbanology Magazine, Passion Magazine and The News Advertiser. I am also a freelance photographer who specializes in portraiture with published photos in Now Magazine, Desi News, Alumni, Urbanology and J’Adore.

During my short career I have interviewed and written articles on Ciara, Simple Plan, Hot Hot Heat, Robin Thicke, Beenie Man, Fefe Dobson, Deborah Cox, The Cool Kids, Juvenile, Jully Black, Kim Davis, Drake, Hedley, Bedouin Soundclash, Keri Hilson, Anthony Parker, Joey Graham, Melanie Durrant, Natasha Bedingfield, Girlicious, Robin Antin (creator of the Pussy Cat Dolls), Lil X, Leah Miller, Rhymefest, Brian Melo, the cast of Da Kink, Frankie J, Juice Rochester, Saukrates, Cabbie from Cabbie on the Street (my fav Canadian TV personality) AND most especially - my besty aka partner in crime Andrea Lewis! My preference is to write on women’s issues and human interest stories, I would tell you all about those but they’re not as punchy as name dropping (*see above for proof).

I dabble in html coding (I re-designed this blog and my own website), sexual education, long boarding, dancing, basketball and feminism. There are few things in life that I wish I did, that I don’t.  To me, that is my greatest success.

About Laid: Laid is the title of Shannon’s book that is going to be released through Seal Press in October 2009. Laid is a non-fiction anthology that takes a peer mediation approach to sexual education. Youth ages 18-25 across North America were asked to share a life changing sexual experience they went through in their teens. Contributors were asked to share their stories as though they were telling it to a best friend, lecturing was prohibited. As a result, Laid is not your typical sexual education book. It’s raw, honest, steamy, scary, inspiring and eye opening stories. The book is separated into five chapters based on five common young adult sexual scenarios: hookups, positive experiences, physical consequences, date rape and abstinence. No two stories are alike but in each chapter you will find the following components: a chapter intro, a question and answer section that addresses issues touched upon in each chapter and finally an activity that challenges the reader to derive their own lessons from other’s experiences. Laid’s has contributors who share positive stories as well as those who have dealt with teenage pregnancy, abortion, STI contraction, hookups, date rape, sexual abuse and living with HIV.

In addition to compiling and guiding each contributor the editor, a 24-year-old journalist, shares her own stories and provides insight in the chapter intros. The book’s goal is to arm readers with the information, hindsight and confidence to pursue an emotionally and physically healthy sex life. After reading each story, readers will form an enhanced understanding of the experiences they want, and want to avoid.

First on foremost, Girl! You are some kinda CRAZY! I like that. I have the greatest appreciation for people (WOMEN, per say) who can truly be themselves and not be conditioned by the traditional / societal “norms” of a women should or should not be.

Secondly, this is my first time visiting both you and Andrea’s blog and I must say that I LUV IT! I LUV IT! I LUV IT! A LOT! Both you ladies are exactly the type of women that I am targeting / reaching out to on my blog.

So, I must say that both Andrea and yourself , Shannon, are muses to young women 20 something.

Keep up the good work and sky is the limit -as Biggie’s song chorus goes-

  16. Comment by Keneisha on July 25, 2009 1:06 am

I’m some kinda Crazy myself. I have idle hands going on with my laptop, hence by unpolished closing.

As a continuation, I hope to see and hear of you doing more projects to enlighten people in the 20 something age group because if you continue to lead in the positive light others will follow and other leaders will be born.

I’m just getting started. I have a lot planned for my blog including women like yourself in the city. Now, I’m finished with my blabbering.

    Heyy Shannon,
I’m new to TGAW (i love u guys!!!) and i was wondering if u ever tried to get ur books into high school sex ed/health classes? I’ve found that alot of kids in my health class are really ignorant and would benefit from reading Laid.
