Wild Girl from the Archives: Dorothy Dandridge – Black History Edition

My favorite part of Black History month is remembering and celebrating the people that came before us. The movers and shakers that changed the world so that we can live the way we do today! My biggest inspiration for wanting to be a singer/actress comes from Dorothy Dandridge! She is one of the most beautiful women to walk the earth and she was extremely talented!

I first discovered her when I was 10 years old and the movie Carmen Jones” was on TV. This is the first all black musical to come out in 1955 and it garnered her an Oscar Nomination! I can relate to her the most because she constantly had to prove to people and the entertainment industry that the color of her skin had no limitations and she was just as beautiful and talented as the Elizabeth Taylor’s and Marilyn Monroe’s of her day! As black actress this is a constant struggle that I deal with on a day to day basis even though it’s 2010!

I absolutely adore this woman and I truly don’t know what the industry would be like today if she hadn’t fought as hard as she did. In this black history I am celebrating Dorothy Dandridge because she is a WILD girl fah true!

Whether your black, white, puerto rican or asian tell me who  you  enjoy celebrating or feel inspired by during black history month?

This was very nice… I had never heard of her before… And one person I admire musically during black history month is none other than Tupac Shakur; simply because he was definately REAL, he was never afraid to be himself, no matter what others thought of him. And everytime I hear my favorite songs by him, it’s like he’s speaking directly to me and I can’t help but feel what he is feeling or feel inspired.

I love Dorothy Dandridge. Thanks for letting the younger generation know about her fabulousness! lol I have always been inspired by Malcolm X. I love how he was militant and firm all while being a gentle and caring family man. I truly believe that he wanted to fight for what was right “by any means necessary” which I am in total agreement of. I miss our black leaders which is why I’m so proud of President Obama. He is truly an inspiration because he is just as firm yet gentle as Malcolm. He cares about human rights. Love you girls! XOXO

Sidney Poitier, I’ve only seen Raisin in the Sun, but that left such an impression on me. Also one of my favorite novels is Richard Wright’s Native Son. Check it out…
