So this week on my Journey to Get LAID on Tyra I dove right in! I found the contact e-mail for 3 producers on the show and made a video + written pitch for them that I will send on Tuesday (happy Martin Luther King Day on Monday everyone). You can find my written pitch when you hit “MORE” on this post (if you can help me polish it that would be swell). Next week I’m going to be focusing on the curriculum I’m creating around the book with Dr. Karen Rayne plus Andrea and I are working on pitching a high school tour. I would LOVE to work on getting on CBC’s The Hour but I haven’t gotten a good contact yet. On the funside me and Akshun are going to do another sex ed through dance. Alright that’s all folks

Since its creation, the Tyra Show has pushed the envelope through its commitment to broadcast the human experience. Tyra’s ability to talk candidly to her audience, girlfriend?to?girlfriend, has made her one of few icons of integrity and beauty for young women who are attempting to sift though today’s media imagery in order to create a sense of self love.
As March is national Talk With Your Teens About Sex month (as designated by the North American Network) it is important for influential programs such as The Tyra Show to address how the internet and our media?saturated culture has changed things for young women; namely how they learn about sex and perceive themselves sexually. With the changing times there is a dire need for a fresh approach to sexual education that empowers young women to make healthy choices by entrusting them with the latest information.

As a 24-year-old female, and creator of the book LAID: Young People’s Experiences with Sex in an Easy?Access Culture, I propose a show entirely about sexual education through peer mediation. Instead of focusing on all the mistakes teens are making, this show will focus on the older generation (20+) sharing their experiences so others can learn vicariously through them. Many people try to paint a perfect picture of themselves when educating youth about making healthy sexual decisions and then are surprised when teens are not comfortable opening up about their reality. I firmly believe that for this audience, personal experiences are a more effective means of education than facts and definitions alone – while the media has mastered this, our sexual education methods often dismiss this tactic.
The Tyra Show has done related groundbreaking episodes such as ‘Teens and Parents Sex Summit’, ‘Ask Sexpert Sue Johanson’ and ‘What’s Up Down There?’ With this show, Tyra will be the first to introduce the “over share” technique of sexual education. Tyra, being a great woman of influence, will hopefully be able to open up about some experiences and lessons learned from her own teenage years, as well as invite guests on the show to do the same. The episode can be supported by my book, LAID: Young People’s Experience with Sex in an Easy?Access Culture. It is an honest?look into what it means to be sexual during this generation told entirely by those ages 18?25. LAID has 40 narratives from those who are abstinent, those who have had great sex, victims of sexual crimes, teenage pregnancies, hooking up and more. LAID is a Globe and Mail bestseller and has been featured on CBC News, CH CH News, Maclean’s Magazine, The Toronto Star and The Toronto Sun.
I strongly feel that an episode on over?sharing in sexual education would offer helpful and relevant information to your teens and adult viewers. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, or to request a review copy of LAID.

my goal = making my college bball team
What i did this week = met with a guy who is really connected with giving scholarships to players for the team and we played basketball together for a little bit. he told me i had skills and told me what i need to do to make the team [running n working out etc.] and he told some coaches about me. And I met with the assistant coach and had a nice convo.
[p.s I wouldnt be doing this if you guys didn't start this "journey to" so if i make the team its extreme gratitude towards both of your inspiring asses.
My other goal= having a really cool and popular blog.
What I did= I started one. It hasnt “officially” been released [meaning i havent promoted it yet, but a few peeps have taken a 1st glance.] I’ll start promoting it by tomorrow b/c I’m not in love with it yet, so I have to do that 1st before I push it. Plus school is kicking my ass.

Wow, you guys are my heroes! It actually really motivates me to see you guys making goals (BIG goals!) and actually getting off your butts and taking real steps (BIG steps!).
I’ve got a goal this year too, but I’ve been kind of putting it on hold lately because I’m going to Cuba next week and I just feel like it will be a huge interruption from any scheduled goal. When I start working on this, I want to do it right and be 100% there. Anyway, I’ll start participating in this series shortly, and in the mean time I just want you guys to know I think it’s BRILLIANT!

So far I’ve found an art school in NYC, and i’m planning to transfer after I finish this semester. I got a 3.0 gpa for this past semester AND one of my art pieces made it in the school art exibit!!

My main goal is to publish a chapbook or full-length collection of poems (and become an active member of the “poetry community”). This week, I researched contests and jotted down deadlines. The first one up is February 15. I’m working on coming up with a theme and organizing the poems I have around it. & I’m working on my app. to Cave Canem.

This is the year dreams will come true =)
So far for my goals….I got rid of all my chocolate..ate it all of course and started healthy snacking and small portion eating. Right now I’m doing a 21 day fast with my church so that’ll help drop pounds.
As for school….I registered for just 2 classes to have more time to focus on each and see if that helps bring up my gpa compared to 4 classes and working full time.
2010 is it…it’s now…it’s time that everything changes!!!!!!!!!!!!
