Andrea Sings for our TGAW Contest Winner!

Big Shout out to Joel for playing with me! He’s coming out with an album soon so check some of his music!

So a last week we held a referral contest and Shayla won with a landslide victory by sending 16 people to TGAW (woo). Her prize is a signed copy of LAID (Shayla pictured reading this book below) plus Andrea promised to sing her any song she chose: Mon Cherie Amor :D what a coincidence because that is the exact song Shandrea would like to dedicate to you Shayla. Thank-you for always commenting on our posts, for evoking discussion and for being a fellow WILD girl.

laid the book

Shayla is also an incredible poet, a fellow journalism graduate (except she graduated with a degree!), a wife and a social activist. Her poems are hella incredible, here is one of our favs

Confounded

1.Those who can’t teach, do

If you don’t enjoy riddles, you probably won’t like poetry.

Some poems are guitars, chords nested deep and sparse within the strings and no matter how many times your dad tries to explain it to you the notes just seem to pop up here and there, just willy-nilly wherever they like.

Insight like Kingston Road: you’re never quite sure where you’re going to come across it.

I write poetry like I play music, just sounding out the notes and practicing over and over, building up muscle memory. I don’t know what I’m playing, but people tell me it sounds pretty.

2. Andrew writes me a poem

Roses are red
Violets are blue
Something something
Something poo

3. A six year old reads Tolstoy

I may never be the person who can
look at one shade of paint on a canvas
(left untitled, the height of laziness!)
or poems in thin, glossy books that read:
sky telephone lace purple miracle
and claim to feel something.

I cry to the poem, “I don’t understand you!”
and the poem answers, “Then hear me.

That is how it begins.”

Shayla asks you: How do you feel about abstract poetry and art? What criteria, if any, does something need to meet in order to be called poetry or art?
(psst! check out more of her work at adelaidepoet.blogspot.com).

How do you feel about abstract poetry and art? What criteria, if any, does something need to meet in order to be called poetry or art?

abstract poetry and art: i think its an acquired taste so to speak. For soe people its just too confusing. But I see the beauty in it and i love that sometimes you can interpret it to mean whatever you want it to mean.

Poetry to me is a relationship of
word whereas in prose the words are just friends.

In poetry I feel invited by the poet. It’s like taking the poets eyes and adopting them as your own just for a moment.

Art to me is anything beautiful, it can even b a person. honestly, i just watched a video of a stripper pole dancing (she had enough clothes on) and i hands down legit thought it was art. It was just amazing and i didnt even feel like a lesbian as i watched it lol. I just appreciated her art form.
correct me if im wrong in thinking this is art.

Everybody has his own way see the world and to express himself and abstract art is the better way to do that! is another vision of the world.
I love abstract art is FREE you can do what ever you want. the norms disappear and make way for feelings & thought. :)

I really don’t like peotry .. is very beautifull but is too much ” flowers in the hair” for me… the only thing i like about poetry, are the rhymes. maybe it doesn’t make sense but… what ever … i’m special lol

lol at carissa .. yes why not! she has another way to express herself!! lol another kind of art.

Great job andrea you have a beautifull voice & congatulations to Shayla!!!!! :) :) :)

Theres one simple criteria for something to be art. it just needs to have a story. Art is story. True or false, right or wrong. Theres always feelings behind it that evokes certain emotion in at least one person for them to call it art. I think art and poetry are interchangeable in a sense. A lot of art is visual poetry, and poetry is linguisitc art. In any case it has to be some sort of expression. Whether others understand it or not.

Andrea: damn you can sing! :)

I too am a creative person, so I’ve got nothing but love for anyone who goes at it hard.

I think Art and Poetry is the result of wanting to express something from your perspective in a way only you can using whatever medium that will most effectively communicate your idea.
